Renowned for its ultra-relaxed pace of life (even by Latin American standards!) Chile is a great destination for those who, while keen to see beautiful scenery and exotic wildlife on their travels, want more than anything else the opportunity to unwind, relax, and recharge their batteries. From the capital city of Santiago to the remote lake district of Patagonia, life in Chile is lived more slowly than elsewhere, allowing visitors and locals alike the time to fully enjoy everything they see and do in this magnificent country. Whether you spend a few days in the capital or a week exploring Patagonia and the Atacama Desert, you will look back on your time in Chile as an oasis of calm in an otherwise chaotic world.
If you are planning to spend a couple of days in Santiago when you travel to Chile, you should take a cable car to the top of San Cristobel Hill while you are there. Situated in the north of the city, its summit is around 300 metres higher than the surrounding area, affording spectacular views over the capital when the weather is fine. The statue of the Virgin Mary at San Cristobel Hill is also a stunning sight and is revered by many in the city. Other attractions in Santiago include the zoo and botanical gardens, which are in the same park as the hill, many world-class restaurants, the Metropolitan Cathedral, and the numerous pavement cafés that are dotted around the city.
A drive through the San Antonio and Casablanca valleys between the Andes and the Pacific Ocean, which are the centre of the Chilean white wine industry, will afford you the opportunity to see some of the best vineyards in the country and, more importantly for many, to taste the fruits of their labour along the way.
The Atacama Desert is the driest non-polar desert in the world and you can explore this stunning strip of land on horseback or in comfortable vans: the choice is yours. If you fancy being pampered during your time here, you can choose to stay at the Alto Atacama Desert Lodge & Spa.
